DOREHILL St.STEVENS "00"GAUGE
This is our new Exhibition Layout under construction to
replace our old popular flagship Barksby and Kennelton
Layout. The layout dimentions are approx 41ft. x 16ft. and it
will be on display at the club's Swannington Open Day's
Show in March 2008. Trains running but Scenery probably
un-finished. First Exhibition scheduled for 2009.
SVMRC's Dorehill St Stevens '00'
The layout measures 41ft 9ins by 14ft 6ins on 22, 6ft by 3ft or 2ft 6ins boards made from 12mm exterior ply on 75mm x 25mm battening, with occasional variations as can be seen in the canal area. The layout requires eight operators but can run with only six.
Dorehill St Stevens is based around the northeast midlands and south Yorkshire, between 1956 and 1962, only six years but a very important period. It encompasses the dying steam age with the verging modem image of diesels.
The layout itself although continuous is not treated as such, but run as an end to end. Trains leave the fiddle yard, which is situated in the centre of the layout, exit on one track and will return on a different line. This is to give the illusion of trains going to and coming from different parts of the country.
Below Is A Typical Journey Of An Express Train Exiting Northeast From The Fiddle.
The express bursts from under the tunnel which supports large industrial buildings past the track to Dorehill on the right and running parallel with the goods line, very soon joins a line that has just crossed a short viaduct over a canal also from Dorehill. The line curves left through a cutting and approaches an important junction where the express takes the straight route and arrives at Newbolden Juction. Platform 3.
Most trains stop here but not all, depending on the timetable, all local and DMU workings
stop here. The layout is run on a sequence timetable and is rigidly followed or all chaos would follow. When the train has acquired its passengers it pulls away over the level crossing and on past the local goods yard on the left fast heading for the distant hills.
The goods avoiding line joins the main just before the line disappears into Tetley tunnel. After exiting the tunnel the branch line from the West Midlands comes in and the express slows as Dorehill station throat approaches, coming to a halt at platform 4. If the train had arrived on platform 2 it would have terminated and returned via the West Midland branch.
When the signal gives the right of way (all signals are fully operational and are strictly followed), the train moves off straight past the parcels depot, MPD and the line to Derby diverging to the left and over the canal. Then the triangle line from Derby joins here, on through the cutting taking the left hand junction route. Stopping at Newbolden Juct. Platform No.1 All trains stop here as this is a joint passenger and goods line, the goods avoiding line diverges to the right and the main line continues straight on and this is where our express is now heading under the bridge then back to the fiddle. This route is operated in the other direction, giving up and down train movements.
Various goods and freight trains such as parcels, coal, ore, empty mineral, milk, vans, etc follow similar routes but use avoiding lines where possible. Pickup goods use the goods yard on a regular basis. Locals route from the fiddle via the West Midlands and Derby lines to Dorehill.
As can be seen there has been a conscious effort to provide a large variety of scenery and a tremendous amount of quality scratch building. The layout is kept in an operating condition at our clubroom and is operated almost every club night, with members bringing their own stock to run. It is with members stock with which the layout at exhibitions is also run, varying from scratch and kit built to modified Bachmann or Hornby. Club members are always willing to discuss any aspect of the layout, from operating to its construction and welcome comments because that is how we all learn.
This layout has been built to replace our old Exhibition circuit
layout Barksby and Kennelton which won many accolades over the years but finally gave up the ghost at our open day's
show in 2006.
It had its first outing at our 2008 openday's show at Swannington
albeit with unfinished scenery.
Its first Exhibition appearance will be at our
25th. Aniversary Annual Exhibition
Garendon School Loughborough 2009, also at
Spalding Lincs. Exhibition 2009

DAVRICH JUNCTION – Built originally by the club chairman for a client, David Richards and subsequently loaned back to the club by his widow, is a fictitious main line through station complete with loco depot, goods sidings and freight yard.
The Station - typical of many on the Midland and Eastern Regions during the 1955/60 era is served by a local connecting branch line with DMU’S and a Push Pull service.
